Most "verified" lists check that a domain has a mail server and stop there. That tells you the company has email, not that the person does. We hold a real SMTP conversation, right up to the point of asking about that exact mailbox, then hang up without sending anything.
If the server says the mailbox is unknown, we mark it invalid. If it accepts every address we try (a catch-all) we cannot honestly call it proven, so we mark it risky rather than sell you a guess. Only a real yes gets valid.
